Rory's Birthday Parties

This whole episode is full of setting up character relationships and what is to come. First off Emily serves pudding at Friday night dinner. Which is pretty monumental. My personal favorite is later in the series when she serves twinkles. Then, she throws her a birthday party with the lousy Chilton gang and makes Lorelai go shopping with her. It's Emily's world and we are all just living in it. Emily's gift selections are also supreme: a $200 pen and a pashmina. I'll take the pashmina if Rory doesn't want it!

The best part of the episode is the transaction between Lorelai and Luke.
Lorelai: "Dance Burger Boy"
Luke: "Will you marry me?"
So much foreshadowing my little heart can't even take it. The best part is Lorelai's shocked face with a twinge of excitement behind it.

The worst part of the episode is the scary melody of Happy Birthday that keeps playing in the background. It's supremely creepy and always pops up when it's not wanted.

I love the character development with Lorelai and Rory when she climbs into her bed on her birthday. Until now we know that the two are close but Lorelai's soft side as a mom doesn't totally become exposed until now. The fact that she tells Rory the story of her birth every year is adorable. The even cuter part is how Rory knows how to finish every sentence. Scenes like this set up the bond between mother and daughter that keeps fans coming back every episode.

The party that the Gilmore's throw is stiff! Lorelai even makes a Shirley Temple Black to get through it. And Chad Michael Murray in this role sucks. Thankfully as the episodes go on Paris becomes more tolerable and the rest of Rory's crew becomes normal human beings. The weirdest part though is that Emily says to out glass in the dishwasher...I don't think so!

I truly love how all of Stars Hollow come to Rory's party! I want my future kids to be that beloved hat a whole bunch of people from all ages come to their birthday parties. However, over half of the extras that are in the background of the party are never seen again and therefore are not Stars Hollow residents! And the episode ends with the young Rory and Dean and the infamous bracelet. I'm partial to Dean in the early years but a Logan fan overall.

Favorite fast talking moment: Emily to Lorelai
"Here I'll find you a pen so that you can write down your insults, so that you don't forget them!"

Second fav fast talking moment:
Rory: "I'll be back in plenty of time to help you decorate!"
Lorelai: "No, have I taught you nothing?! You don't decorate it's your birthday. You sit and lounge and mock those that work!"

The Pilot

I can't launch a new blog without starting at the very beginning...a very good place to start! So I turned on The Pilot. First thought is oh my god that is not what Stars Hollow looks like, obviously they changed the set when the success of the show took off. The town is supposed to be minuscule and the opening scene features a street that is Gigantic and never seen again.

The fact that the show opens on a convo between Lorelai and Luke is nothing short of perfect. The most perfect example of accidental foreshadowing. As many of you probably know: Luke's character was originally written to be a woman and was only supposed to be featured in six episodes. What would the girls be without their handyman, sarcastic teddy bear of Luke Danes? Thank goodness Amy Sherman-Palladino cast Scott Patterson and saw reason to leave him involved.

The amount of character development that takes place in this one episode is unreal. However, I guess with all of the fast talking it should be expected. The agreement between Lorelai and her parents sets the stage for seven seasons. The show wouldn't reach half the fans that it does if it wasn't for the strained parent-daughter relationship. The miracle of it all is the beautiful and deep relationship of Rory and  Lorelai. The other miracle is that Kelly Bishop looks older in this pilot than she does in the series finale.

The only bad part of this episode is Sookie's clumsiness. Thankfully that gets cut out as the season goes along. It's unrealistic because she never would have become a chef if she didn't know how to use pot holders.

Pointless facts:
Crazy Carrie who is friends withLukes sister Liz and obsessed with Luke in later seasons is seen as a teacher in Stars Hollow High.
Lane calls Mrs. Kim mom in the pilot but mama in every other episode.
They eat SALAD at Luke's.

Fav Fast Talking Moment:
Lane to Rory "Okay there's academic-minded and then there's Amish!"

Jen's First Day as a Gilmore Blogger

Honestly,  I haven't always been a Gilmore Girls junkie. I'm sort is ashamed to say it! I watched it every now and then growing up but I became a true fan in college. I was extremely sick and couldn't leave my bed one weekend in my junior year. My roommate had all of the seasons and I was desperately lonely and bored so I figured it would be a good way to make the time pass. The time passed and ever since then I have passed a lot of time watching Gilmore Girls.

In truth I have seen the show in its entirety at least four times over. There is something about Stars Hollow and that Gilmore magic. This blog will document my thoughts, feelings and rants about episodes. Some will be in order and some day it might just be thoughts on a random episode or idea. Hand on to discuss anvils, poodles, coffee and Kirk!
